
Karen Ottoni
Karen L. Ottoni first joined SMIR/SMRC in January 2004 when she helped found the American University chapter. She graduated from American University’s School of International Service cum laude with a B.A. in International Studies. Her concentrations included international development, economic policy, and international business. Karen has had several international experiences, which have inspired her to pursue a career in development. While studying abroad in France during high school she gained an interest in international politics, and then continued her cross-cultural exploration with experiences in Italy, the Czech Republic, Belgium, and Costa Rica. In Prague she explored her interest in human rights and media while working for Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty. She has lobbied Members of European Parliament with the Foratom European Atomic Forum, and interned for the Organization of American States. In Costa Rica, she volunteered teaching English to young people and adults who wanted to obtain better job opportunities. She is a native of Brazil and speaks five languages: English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, and Italian.
