Claremont Colleges - Student Movement for Real Change

The Student Movement for International Relief -Claremont Chapter was formed in 2003 by Lily Muldoon (Pomona ’07) and Lauren Pedley (Pomona ’07).  The Claremont Chapter now has members from Pomona College, Claremont McKenna, Pitzer and Scripps.  The club strives to increase student awareness and participation in international issues and actively fundraises for relief projects. The Claremont Chapter alone has raised over $15,000 for the Mashlati school in South Africa.  Currently, the club is raising funds for the Kenya Water Project and has already raised $1,500.

The most recent leaders of the Claremont Chapter of SMIR are Elaine McClaughlin (Pomona ’08), Jen Reinsel (Pomona ’06), and Jess Stephens (Claremont McKenna ’08).

To raise awareness about neglected regions of the world, SMIR organizes an annual “Africa Awareness Week” (see more below).  To fundraise the organization hosts various events and activities.  The most successful campaigns have been the “$10 Campaign” where a donor receives a bracelet for a ten dollar donation, and a letter-writing campaign where students write to friends and family asking for donations.  The club also holds bake sales, pizza sales, book drives, poker tournaments, t-shirt sales and many other activities to raise money.

Also as part of as part of Africa Awareness Week 2005, members of the club proudly wore the “truth on their shirts” in an effort to stun people with dramatic facts about wide-ranging issues from HIV-AIDS to the lack of clean water in many communities in Africa

Africa Awareness Week 2007

The Claremont Chapter hosts Africa Awareness Week to engage American students in discussions about global issues, to highlight various African cultures, and to address the problems that plague the continent.  The club hosts movies that pertain to everything from HIV to child prostitution, invites speakers, holds an African dance class open to all students, and disseminates facts about Africa.

World Water Day – March 22, 2007

Claremont College SMRC member, Julia Carr, sits enthusiastically at the World Water Day booth at Pomona College.

The Claremont Colleges SMRC chapter celebrated World Water Day on Thursday with a booth set up to help raise awareness about our goals for the water pipeline in Kenya. Members of the group helped out at the booth and answered questions about our chapter and the mission of the Student Movement for Real Change. We sold Ethos water, T-shirts, and bracelets for those interested in helping the cause. Honoring World Water Day as a group was a great way to get the word out and spread awareness about water issues around the globe.
